What to Expect During Your First Reiki Session

Here’s what usually happens during a session at Flow Reiki and Wellness, and what you can expect to feel.


You’ll Start by Settling In


When you arrive, we’ll talk briefly about:


  • What’s been weighing on you

  • Any physical tension or emotional heaviness

  • Your intention for the session

  • Your comfort level with light touch


You can share as much or as little as you want. Some people talk for five minutes, while others talk for twenty — both are perfectly okay. Reiki is collaborative, but it never demands vulnerability you’re not ready for.


You Stay Fully Clothed + Get Comfortable


This tends to surprise people — Reiki is not massage and doesn’t involve manipulating muscles. You’ll lie on a comfortable table (or sit, if that’s better for you), fully clothed, under a blanket if you prefer.


You get to let your body exhale — sometimes for the first time in weeks.


The Reiki Begins (and This Is Where People Really Relax)


I’ll move through hand placements either gently on or slightly above the body. Most people describe sensations like:


  • Warmth

  • A gentle pulsing

  • Waves of calm

  • Tingling

  • Emotional release

  • A feeling like time slows down


Some people don’t feel anything specific at all — they just feel better. There’s no wrong experience.


Reiki helps activate your body’s parasympathetic nervous system, which is the “rest and restore” mode most of us forget how to access in daily life.


Your Mind May Wander (Totally Normal)


Some clients fall asleep.

Some talk.

Some zone out in that comforting half-dream space.

You’ll have a few minutes to slowly come back, drink water, and talk through anything that came up:

When I first walked into Reiki, I was in full burnout mode — the kind only teachers, caregivers, and overextended women truly understand. And yet, Reiki met me exactly as I was.
