Animal Reiki: Supporting Healing, Comfort, and Connection for Our Beloved Pets

If you’ve ever looked into your pet’s eyes while they were sick or in pain, you know how helpless it can feel. We would do anything to take away their discomfort. While veterinary medicine is always the foundation of caring for an ill animal, many pet parents are surprised to learn that Reiki can be a beautiful complementary practice that helps support healing, relaxation, and overall well-being.

As a certified Animal Reiki practitioner, I’ve had the privilege of working with dogs and cats at different stages of life—from anxious rescues adjusting to a new home to beloved companions recovering from illness or nearing the end of their journey. Every session reminds me of one simple truth: animals are incredibly receptive to gentle, loving energy.

What Is Animal Reiki?

Animal Reiki is a gentle, non-invasive energy practice that promotes relaxation and supports the body’s natural ability to heal. Unlike traditional hands-on Reiki sessions with people, Animal Reiki is entirely guided by the animal’s comfort level. Sometimes they choose to lie beside me. Sometimes they remain across the room. Occasionally they’ll walk away and return several minutes later.

The beautiful thing about Animal Reiki is that the animal is always in control. There is no forcing, restraining, or expectation. We simply create a calm, peaceful space where healing energy is offered, allowing the animal to receive only what they need.

Here you can see my cat Cricket, skeptical at first, receive Reiki.

How Can Animal Reiki Help?

While Reiki is not a substitute for veterinary care and does not diagnose or cure illness, many pet owners report positive changes after sessions, including:

  • Greater relaxation and improved sleep

  • Reduced stress and anxiety

  • Increased comfort during illness or recovery

  • Support during chronic conditions

  • Greater emotional balance after trauma or adoption

  • Comfort during hospice or end-of-life care

  • A stronger sense of peace for both the animal and their family

Animals don’t overthink the process. They simply respond to how they feel—and often that response is remarkable.

One Dog Who Finally Relaxed

One of my favorite memories was working with a sweet dog who had been struggling with discomfort and constant restlessness. His family described him as never truly settling down. During our Reiki session, something shifted.

He slowly lowered himself onto the floor, let out one enormous sigh, and drifted into one of the deepest sleeps his owner had seen in weeks.

His owner later shared that he seemed noticeably calmer afterward and appeared much more comfortable over the next several days. Moments like that are incredibly meaningful—not because Reiki “fixed” him, but because it gave his body permission to relax, something that’s often difficult when an animal isn’t feeling well.

A Cat Who Chose the Energy

Cats are wonderfully honest Reiki clients.

I once worked with a cat who wanted absolutely nothing to do with people that day. Rather than trying to coax her over, I simply began offering Reiki from across the room.

For several minutes she ignored me completely. I’m used to that reaction because my own cat, Cricket, is very picky about when he allows me to give him Reiki. This cat was no different.

Finally, on her own terms, she quietly walked over, curled up a few feet away, closed her eyes, and remained there for the rest of the session.

No treats. No calling her name. Just her decision.

That’s one of the reasons I love Animal Reiki so much. Animals teach us patience and respect. They choose when they’re ready.

Healing Is About More Than the Physical Body

One of the biggest misconceptions about healing is that it always means curing disease.

Sometimes healing looks like reduced anxiety before surgery or better sleep after weeks of discomfort. Sometimes it’s helping a senior dog feel peaceful during their final chapter.

It can even be helping a worried pet parent feel calmer, which in turn helps their animal relax as well.

Reiki supports the whole being—body, mind, and spirit and a pet requires support in those areas as well.

Distance Reiki for Animals

One of the most amazing aspects of Reiki is that it isn’t limited by physical distance.

Whether your pet is relaxing at home, recovering after a procedure, or you simply live too far away for an in-person session, Distance Animal Reiki offers the same loving intention and energetic support. Many animals naturally rest, yawn, stretch, or fall asleep during distance sessions, and their owners often notice they’re more peaceful afterward.

Every Animal Is Different

Just like people, every animal responds differently. Some become sleepy.

Some become playful (which can make for a hilarious Reiki session). Some drink more water afterward. Others simply seem lighter, calmer, or more like themselves.

There are no expectations—only an invitation for the body and nervous system to move toward balance. This is especially helpful for rescue pets who may have experienced trauma in their past.

A Gentle Gift of Love

Our pets give us unconditional love every single day. Animal Reiki is one way we can offer that same unconditional presence back to them.

Whether your companion is facing illness, recovering from surgery, adjusting to a new home, living with chronic pain, or simply getting older, Reiki can be a gentle addition to the care they’re already receiving. Watching an animal soften, relax, and feel safe—even for a little while—is one of the greatest gifts this work has given me.

If you’d like to learn more about Animal Reiki or schedule a session for your beloved pet, I’d be honored to support both of you on your healing journey. Just reach out or snag a spot on my schedule. I would be honored to meet and help your furry family member!
