New Research on Reiki and Pain Relief in Cancer Patients — and Why It Matters

One of the things I love most about Reiki is that it reminds us healing is about so much more than just the physical body.

Recently, a new study on Reiki and cancer patients caught my attention because it reflects something so many Reiki practitioners and clients have experienced firsthand for years: when the body is finally able to relax and feel safe, incredible things can happen.
In this recent randomized controlled study, researchers looked at how Reiki affected cancer patients dealing with pain, anxiety, and stress. The results were really encouraging. Patients who received Reiki showed greater reductions in pain, anxiety, and stress compared to the other groups in the study. Some of the positive effects even continued months later.
That’s huge.
And honestly, it makes so much sense to me.
When someone is dealing with chronic stress, illness, fear, emotional overwhelm, or physical pain, the nervous system often gets stuck in survival mode. The body becomes tense. Sleep suffers. Emotions build up. Pain can feel even heavier because the entire system is exhausted.
Reiki helps create space for the body to breathe again.
I’ve seen it so many times in sessions. Sometimes clients don’t even realize how much tension they’ve been carrying until they finally let go of it on the table. Their breathing slows. Their shoulders soften. Their nervous system settles. Sometimes emotions surface. Sometimes they fall into the deepest sleep they’ve had in weeks.
That state of deep relaxation matters.
While Reiki is not a replacement for medical care or treatment, it can be an incredibly supportive complementary practice for people navigating pain, illness, stress, grief, or emotional exhaustion.
Some of the ways Reiki may help support clients include:
Encouraging deep relaxation
Helping calm the nervous system
Reducing emotional stress and overwhelm
Supporting better sleep
Helping the body feel more balanced and grounded
Creating a sense of peace during difficult times
Cancer impacts every part of a person — not just physically, but emotionally and mentally too. Sometimes what people need most is simply a safe space to rest, process, and feel cared for.
That’s one of the reasons Reiki means so much to me personally.
As someone who originally found Reiki during my own healing journey after major knee surgery, I know what it feels like to search for something that helps you feel like yourself again — physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Reiki brought me a sense of peace I didn’t even realize I was missing at the time.
Seeing more research emerge around Reiki and pain management is exciting because I think the world is slowly beginning to recognize the importance of supporting the whole person, not just the diagnosis.
Healing is layered. It’s emotional. It’s energetic. It’s physical. It’s mental.
And sometimes the most powerful thing we can do for the body is help it remember how to rest.
If you’d like to learn more about Reiki or experience a session for yourself, I’d love to support you on your healing journey.
